Q3
a. What is the purpose of ROM? List the different types of ROM.
Ans: ROM is used to hold the instructions that are executed when the
computer is initially switched on. These instructions are used to
start the computer.
Types of ROM –
PROM (Programmable Read-Only Memory)
EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)
EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)
b. Write a short note on the role of the secondary memory of a computer.
Ans: In the secondary memory of a computer, information is stored
permanently for future use. The information stored here can be
accessed instantly. The operating system, computer applications,
and files created by the user are generally stored here.
Secondary memory devices can be removable and non– removable. For example, an internal hard disk is a non-removable storage device that can store a large amount of data. CDs and pen drives are removable storage devices that are used to transfer data from one computer to another.
c. What is the use of a computer fan inside the system unit?
Ans: A computer fan inside the system unit is used for cooling the different parts that get heated up when the computer is ON. The fan is used to pull in the cool air into the case of the CPU box and blow out the hot air from inside.
d. Explain the significance of the motherboard.
Ans: The motherboard connects the different parts of a computer directly or indirectly with the processor. It is a thin plate that holds the processor and other components. It provides electrical connections by which other components of the system can communicate with each other.
