Q4. Answer the following questions. (Textbook exercise)
a. What is organic farming?
Ans- Organic farming is a method of farming where crops are cultivated without
the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides that contain harmful
chemicals.
b. Explain in detail the process of threshing and winnowing.
Ans- Threshing: After harvesting, the grains areseparated from the crop,
both manually and by using machines. This process is called threshing.
Winnowing: It means separating husk from grains. For winnowing, the grain with the
husk is allowed to fall to the ground from a height.The heavy grains fall to
the ground and the light weight husks get blown away with the wind.
c. What are bio fertilisers?
Ans. Bio fertilisers are the substances that contain living and dead organisms
that release nutrients to the soil.
d. Write the difference between food crops and cash crops.
Ans.difference
between food crops and cash crops are as follows:

Crops such as rice and
wheat that are grown for human consumption are
called food crops. |
Crops that are grown for
sale either in a raw form or in
semi-processed form such as cotton, jute, tobacco, etc. are called cash crops. |
e. Explain the process of ploughing in agriculture.
Ans. The ploughing is the first step of the agriculture practices. In this
step we turn up or loosen the soil with a plough, before the sowing of seeds.
It is important to plough the soil to ensure that the plants and crops can grow
well. It is done with the help of a plough pulled by bulls or a tractor.
f. Give two examples of Rabi crops.
Ans- Wheat, barley are the examples of
Rabi crops.
